New Study Reveals Coffee’s Surprising Impact on Gut Health

For coffee lovers, there’s yet another reason to enjoy their favorite brew—recent research suggests that coffee may significantly benefit gut health.

Long recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, coffee has been linked to various health advantages, including improved mental alertness, reduced inflammation, heart health support, and even pain relief after exercise. Now, a new study published in Nature Microbiology highlights an additional benefit: coffee encourages the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

What Did Researchers Discover?

The study examined stool samples from 22,867 individuals to explore the impact of coffee on gut microbiota. Participants were divided into three categories: those who rarely drank coffee (fewer than three cups per month), moderate drinkers (three cups per month to three cups daily), and heavy coffee consumers (three or more cups daily).

Findings revealed that coffee drinkers had higher levels of L. asaccharolyticus, a beneficial bacterial strain. This suggests that coffee consumption may foster a healthier gut microbiome—an exciting revelation for regular coffee drinkers.

Why Is Gut Health Important?

Dr. Michael Caplan, clinical professor at the University of Chicago and chief scientific officer at Endeavor Health, emphasizes the crucial role of the gut microbiome in overall health. He explains that beneficial gut bacteria contribute to digestion, immune function, and disease prevention. Maintaining a diverse microbiome can help prevent traveler’s diarrhea, antibiotic-induced digestive issues, and may even play a role in managing obesity, heart disease, and chemotherapy responses.

Additionally, since the majority of immune cells are housed in the gut, keeping it healthy is essential for overall well-being. A balanced gut microbiome also helps regulate inflammation, digestion, and even mood—highlighting the strong connection between gut health and mental well-being.

How Does Coffee Support Gut Bacteria?

Dr. Caplan clarifies that coffee’s gut health benefits aren’t solely due to caffeine. Even decaffeinated coffee has a positive effect, suggesting that polyphenols—such as chlorogenic acid and quinic acid—are the key contributors. These compounds act as prebiotics, nourishing beneficial gut bacteria and encouraging their growth.

Are There Limitations to These Findings?

While these findings are promising, further research is necessary. Dr. Caplan notes that L. asaccharolyticus was only identified within the last five years, and its specific health benefits remain under investigation. Future studies will determine whether it can reduce disease risk or improve health outcomes related to conditions like heart disease and cancer.

How Much Coffee Should You Drink for These Benefits?

According to Dr. Caplan, consuming one to two cups of coffee daily is sufficient to stimulate gut-friendly bacteria and support long-term health. This aligns with FDA guidelines, which recommend limiting caffeine intake to 400 milligrams per day—roughly four cups of brewed coffee.

For those who prefer their coffee with milk or sugar, there’s good news—the study found that these additions do not diminish coffee’s gut health benefits.

The Takeaway

This research provides yet another reason to enjoy coffee, as it may promote a healthier gut microbiome. However, coffee isn’t the only way to support gut health. Incorporating other probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha can further enhance gut bacteria diversity and overall well-being.
