The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has officially revised its position on the origins of Covid-19, announcing on Saturday that it now considers it “more likely” that the virus leaked from a Chinese laboratory rather than being transmitted from animals.
This shift in assessment follows the confirmation of John Ratcliffe as CIA Director, under the second term of the Trump administration.
Ratcliffe, who served as the Director of National Intelligence from 2020 to 2021 during Trump’s first term, emphasized in an interview that investigating the origins of Covid-19 would be a top priority for him.
In a statement, the CIA spokesperson clarified that the agency, after reviewing available intelligence, has concluded with “low confidence” that a research-related origin of the pandemic is more plausible than a natural one.
This marked a significant change, as the CIA had not previously taken a firm stance on whether the virus resulted from a laboratory accident or emerged through animal-to-human transmission.
The spokesperson also noted that both the lab-leak and natural origin scenarios remain plausible, but current evidence leans slightly toward the lab-leak theory.
Ratcliffe, who has long been an advocate for the lab-leak hypothesis, made his position clear in a recent interview with Breitbart, asserting that the CIA would no longer “sit on the sidelines” regarding the origins of the pandemic.
He pointed out that the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which is located in the same city where the earliest known Covid-19 cases emerged, has been at the center of the lab-leak theory.
Wuhan is a significant research hub for coronaviruses, and some proponents of the lab-leak theory argue that the virus might have escaped from the facility, given that it is situated around 1,600 kilometers away from the nearest bat populations that carry similar SARS-like viruses.
This reassessment comes after a new analysis of existing intelligence, which was commissioned by former CIA Director William Burns prior to Ratcliffe’s appointment.
While the CIA has revised its outlook, other U.S. agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Energy, have expressed support for the lab-leak theory, though with varying levels of confidence.
Meanwhile, many parts of the U.S. intelligence community still lean toward the theory that Covid-19 originated naturally.
The renewed focus on the lab-leak theory has reignited debates on the origins of the pandemic, with proponents suggesting that the virus’s proximity to the Wuhan Institute raises significant questions.
The investigation into Covid-19’s origins remains ongoing, with various intelligence agencies continuing to gather and analyze data.
