Lahore โ Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez has suggested Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique as potential replacements for Babar Azam in the ODI batting order if the star batter becomes unavailable. He shared his views on X, emphasizing the need to prepare alternatives for the crucial number three position.
Looking ahead to upcoming international fixtures, including the next ODI World Cup in South Africa, Hafeez urged team management to test backup options. He noted that Shan Masood, who averages 53 in List A cricket, and Abdullah Shafique could both serve as viable candidates.
Although Masood has played only nine ODIs, scoring 163 runs at an average of 18.11, his domestic record remains impressive, featuring over 6,400 runs with consistent performances. Meanwhile, Shafique has accumulated 737 runs in 27 ODIs at an average of 29.48, including one century and six half-centuries.
At the same time, Pakistanโs selection committee has requested the Pakistan Cricket Board to investigate injuries to Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026. Committee member Aaqib Javed stated that selectors were not fully informed about the playersโ fitness conditions.
Furthermore, Pakistan rested six senior players during the recent ODI series against Bangladesh, which the hosts won 2โ1. The decision sparked criticism from fans, who questioned team selection and planning.
However, Javed clarified that injuries influenced the decision and that selectors had already planned to introduce younger players. Consequently, the squad included six uncapped players to provide international exposure and build bench strength.
