In response to the severe consequences of recent heavy rains, Gwadar has been officially declared a disaster zone, as announced by the Caretaker Provincial Information Minister, John Achakzai.
The decision was prompted by the devastating impact of torrential rains in Gwadar, Kech district, and other areas of Balochistan.
The declaration follows a series of emergency measures implemented by the district administration to address the crisis.
The Caretaker Chief Minister, in collaboration with local authorities, promptly took action, approving the formal recognition of Gwadar as a disaster zone.
Heavy rains disrupted normal life and traffic, especially on the Coastal Highway, causing significant disruptions in vital connections between Gwadar, Ormara, and other key regions. Reports indicate substantial damage to the region’s infrastructure, with collapsed boundary walls and roofs of mud houses in various areas.
Due to the severity of the situation, the Gwadar district administration declared a state of emergency in rain-affected areas. Para-military forces have been deployed to aid in rescue and relief operations, aiming to alleviate the impact on affected communities.
Meteorological officials confirmed that Gwadar witnessed its most substantial rainfall since 2010, recording over 100mm in just 12 hours. The intensity of the rainfall is reminiscent of storms triggered by a cyclone that struck the region over a decade ago.
Despite the widespread destruction, no casualties have been reported thus far. Nevertheless, concerted efforts are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of residents affected by the calamity.
