The federal government has officially designated Gwadar Airport as an international airport, marking a significant milestone that will allow international flights to operate from the facility.
This designation also opens the door for the airport to be used for cargo transportation.
In connection with this announcement, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued two key notifications. The first notification, issued under section (9), formally recognizes Gwadar Airport as an international airport. The second notification, issued under section (10), grants legal authorization for passengers to board and disembark from international flights at Gwadar International Airport.
Earlier this year, in October, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang virtually inaugurated the Beijing-funded Gwadar International Airport during a ceremony held in Islamabad. Prime Minister Sharif described the development as a crucial step towards realizing the vision of regional connectivity, highlighting the strength of the Pakistan-China friendship.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by members of both delegations, as well as ministers, military leaders, and senior officials.
The new airport, which was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs54.98 billion (approximately $240 million), is equipped with runways that meet international standards. Located 26 kilometers northeast of the existing Gwadar Airport, the facility spans 3,000 acres of land provided by the government of Pakistan. It is the second greenfield airport in the country, following the construction of Islamabad’s new airport.
The new Gwadar International Airport is designed to handle a variety of aircraft, including the ATR 72, Airbus A-300, Boeing 737, and Boeing 747, accommodating both domestic and international flights.
