Gul Noor Tambet has made history by becoming the first Turkish woman to successfully reach the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. This incredible feat was achieved on Monday, August 11, at 4 pm, according to a press release that celebrated her remarkable accomplishment.
Gul’s journey to the peak of K2 was the culmination of months of dedicated preparation and relentless determination. She arrived in Pakistan in June and began her expedition by climbing the impressive Tirich Mir, the highest mountain of the Hindu Kush range.
Despite the severe and unpredictable weather conditions that forced many climbers to abandon their attempts at K2 in July, Gul remained steadfast in her goal. Her perseverance and passion for mountaineering drove her onward, enabling her to overcome the harsh environment and physical challenges posed by the mountain.
Reaching the summit of K2 places Gul among an elite group of climbers and firmly establishes her as a trailblazer for Turkish mountaineers, particularly women. This achievement is especially significant because K2 is widely regarded as one of the most difficult and dangerous peaks to climb due to its extreme weather, technical difficulty, and high fatality rate.
Gul’s accomplishment is not her first in the world of high-altitude mountaineering. Over the years, she has climbed the Seven Summits — the highest mountains on each continent — as well as more than 30 other high peaks across various countries, including Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Nepal, Argentina, and the United States. She also holds the distinction of being the first Turkish woman to summit Mount Everest.
Her passion for mountaineering began when she was just 17 years old. Despite her demanding climbing career, Gul balances her adventurous pursuits with her professional life as a marketing professor at San Francisco State University in the United States.
Following her triumphant ascent of K2, Gul shared a moment of celebration with her supporters by posting a photo from the summit on her Instagram account, expressing her excitement and gratitude to the team that supported her throughout the expedition.
Her historic climb not only highlights her extraordinary personal achievements but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring climbers in Turkey and around the world.
