A Major Boost for Mamdani
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has officially endorsed Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in his bid for New York City mayor. The endorsement marks a major political boost for the rising Muslim politician.
In a New York Times opinion piece, Hochul explained her decision. She wrote that collaboration between the governor and mayor remains essential for improving the lives of New York’s 8.3 million residents.
“The question of who will be the next mayor is one I take extremely seriously,” Hochul noted. “Tonight I am endorsing Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.”
Hochul’s Message on X
The governor also amplified her endorsement on X. She declared that New York City deserves a mayor who can challenge Donald Trump and make life more affordable. She stated clearly: “That’s @ZohranKMamdani.”
Mamdani Welcomes Support
Mamdani quickly responded with gratitude. In a post on X, he thanked Hochul for unifying the party and standing against Trump. He emphasized their shared focus on affordability and pledged strong cooperation. “Our movement is only growing stronger,” Mamdani wrote.
Shifting Democratic Dynamics
The endorsement indicates that centrist Democrats may now be more willing to support the 33-year-old candidate. Mamdani earlier defeated Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary with progressive promises, including a $30 minimum wage and higher taxes for the wealthy.
Moreover, his campaign energized thousands of new voters. Current polling shows Mamdani leading comfortably against Cuomo, now running as an independent, as well as incumbent Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Hochul’s Calculated Move
Until recently, Hochul resisted endorsing any candidate. In June, she admitted there were differences in her positions compared to Mamdani’s. However, after recent meetings, she shifted her stance. Hochul, seeking re-election next year, recently launched her campaign ad portraying herself as a determined fighter against Trump.
Progressive Momentum Grows
Mamdani’s primary victory has inspired over 10,000 progressives to consider running for office. He already secured endorsements from Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator Chris Van Hollen.
Yet, senior Democrats remain cautious. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, as well as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have not endorsed any candidate.
Controversial Foreign Policy Stance
Mamdani’s outspoken criticism of Israel has created unease within the party. He has called Israel’s war on Gaza a genocide and vowed to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York.
Mamdani insisted that he would honor the International Criminal Court’s warrant against Netanyahu. He declared that Netanyahu is a war criminal who must face accountability.
