ISLAMABAD: The federal government has cancelled the planned increase in toll taxes on national highways and motorways.
The decision was announced on Friday after a sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices put extra pressure on the public.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said the move came on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. National Highways Authority (NHA) has withdrawn the notification that was supposed to take effect from April 5.
No Toll Increase This Year
Aleem Khan clarified that no toll tax increase was applied during the current financial year. The earlier plan for a quarterly adjustment has now been completely cancelled.
Additionally, the governmentโs quick decision aims to give some relief to transporters, commuters, and ordinary citizens.
Overall, this comes just days after the government raised petrol and diesel prices significantly, which drew strong criticism from the public and opposition parties.
