Relief Measures for Flood-Affected Citizens
Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmad Leghari has announced a major relief measure for communities affected by recent floods across Pakistan. In a public statement issued on Saturday, Leghari confirmed that electricity bills for the month of August 2025 have been completely waived for consumers residing in flood-hit regions.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for what he called a “timely and people-friendly” decision aimed at alleviating the burden on citizens grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding. “The Power Division will ensure the immediate implementation of the Prime Minister’s directive,” Leghari said, reaffirming the government’s dedication to providing meaningful support to vulnerable populations.
In addition, the minister clarified that any electricity bills already collected for August will be fully refunded or adjusted in the next billing cycle. The refund process will be carried out swiftly and transparently, he assured.
PM Shehbaz Sharif Orders Halt to Bill Collection
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to assess the situation in flood-affected areas and directed electricity distribution companies to immediately stop collecting August 2025 bills from impacted residents. During the meeting, he emphasized the urgent need to offer direct economic relief to those displaced or financially strained by the floods.
The Prime Minister also announced that a comprehensive relief package for electricity consumers in the affected areas will be finalized following discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This broader package may include extended payment deferrals, bill subsidies, or targeted support for low-income households.
Officials at the Power Division have been instructed to coordinate with local distribution companies and administrative authorities to ensure smooth execution of the waiver, avoiding any confusion or delays in the refund and adjustment process.
