ISLAMABAD: The federal government is keen to form the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) on Thursday, immediately after the National Assembly approved the 27th Constitutional Amendment. President Asif Zardari will sign the amendment, paving way for the creation of the court.
27th Amendment Likely to Pass Today
According to senior officials, the National Assembly is expected to resume debate on the amendment today (Wednesday), with the government determined to secure its passage by evening. โWithin hours of its approval, the amendment will be sent to the President for his assent,โ an official confirmed, adding that the change would then become part of the Constitution.
Oath-Taking Ceremony Scheduled for Thursday
Once the constitutional process is completed, the government intends to hold the oath-taking ceremony for FCC judges on Thursday. This event will officially mark the courtโs inception as Pakistanโs newest judicial institution.
Preparations for Appointments Already Completed
Sources said the government has finalized all arrangements regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice and other judges of the FCC. The courtโs initial strength will be defined through a Presidential Order, while any future expansion in the number of judges will require parliamentary approval through an Act of Parliament.
Appointment Process Outlined in Amendment
Under the provisions of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the president will appoint FCC judges based on the prime ministerโs advice. The Senate already passed the bill earlier this week, and its approval in the National Assembly today will pave the way for immediate implementation.
Once the president Asif Zardari signs the amendment, arrangements will be completed to ensure the FCC begins its working as early as possible.
