Historic Recognition for Rawalpindiโs Iconic Institution
Government Graduate College Asghar Mall in Rawalpindi has been officially declared a national heritage site. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi. The decision recognises the collegeโs deep historical, educational, and cultural value.
The minister shared the news while addressing a ceremony at the college campus. He said a formal event would soon be organised to officially confer the heritage status. The declaration aims to preserve the institutionโs legacy for future generations. It also highlights the role of historic educational buildings in national identity.
Aurangzeb Khan Khichi described the college as a living symbol of knowledge and character. He said the institution represents Pakistanโs rich cultural legacy. He added that students studying there are the future of the nation. According to him, protecting such institutions is essential for cultural continuity.
The announcement was warmly welcomed by faculty members and students. Many described it as a proud moment for Rawalpindi and the Potohar region. The heritage status is expected to improve conservation efforts. It may also increase academic and cultural activities at the campus.
Education, Youth, and National Progress
While addressing students, the minister recalled the message of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. He stressed that education is the foundation of national progress. He urged students to focus on character building alongside academic success. Short-term achievements, he said, should not replace long-term national goals.
The minister encouraged students to act as ambassadors of Pakistan. He said those who travel or study abroad should project a positive image of the country. According to him, educated youth play a key role in shaping global perceptions. He reminded students that discipline and integrity matter as much as degrees.
Aurangzeb Khan Khichi also invited the college administration to work closely with his ministry. He proposed cooperation agreements with cultural institutions under the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture. These partnerships would support research, exhibitions, and academic programs.
He assured the college of full government support. The minister said the institution could use the ministryโs platforms free of cost. These platforms would help promote educational, literary, and cultural activities. He said such collaboration would benefit both students and faculty.
Heritage Building Reflects Potoharโs Cultural Legacy
College Principal Professor Dr Tanveer Ahmed Khan Khichi also spoke at the event. He highlighted new academic initiatives at the college. He revealed that archaeology classes had recently been launched. He described the move as a pioneering step at the college level.
The minister assured full cooperation from the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums. He said experts would assist in preservation and academic development. This support would help protect the historic building and its surroundings.
The college building is 113 years old. It was constructed in 1913 and reflects colonial-era architecture. The structure represents the educational and cultural heritage of the Potohar region. Its design and history make it a landmark in Rawalpindi.
The institution was originally established in 1903 as Sanatana Dharma High School. In 1948, it was granted college status. It became the first public-sector college in the Potohar region. Over decades, it has produced scholars, civil servants, and national leaders.
The heritage declaration marks a new chapter for the historic institution. It strengthens efforts to preserve Pakistanโs educational history. It also reinforces the importance of learning as a national value.
