Four-Day Holiday
The federal government of Pakistan has officially announced a four-day public holiday in observance of Eidul Azha, one of the most significant religious festivals in the Islamic calendar. According to a report, the holidays will begin on Friday, June 6, and will continue through Monday, June 9.
The announcement was made following formal approval by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who confirmed that all government offices, private institutions, banks, and educational establishments across the country will remain closed during this period.
The decision aims to facilitate the people of Pakistan in celebrating Eidul Azha with ease and comfort. It reflects the governmentโs effort to accommodate the religious sentiments of the nation by allowing ample time for preparations, family gatherings, and the performance of Qurbani (ritual animal sacrifice), which is central to the Eid celebrations.
The holiday declaration comes shortly after the sighting of the Zilhajj moon on May 27, as confirmed by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The committeeโs chairman, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, announced that Eidul Azha will be observed on Saturday, June 7, across the country.
The moon sighting marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Zilhajj, during which Muslims around the world perform Hajj โ the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca.
Eidul Azha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allahโs command.
In recognition of his devotion, Allah provided a ram to be sacrificed in place of his son. Muslims emulate this act of submission by sacrificing animals such as goats, cows, or camels, and distributing the meat among family, friends, and those in need.
The holiday period will allow citizens to engage in religious and cultural practices associated with Eid, including Eid prayers, family reunions, and acts of charity.
With the long weekend, many are also expected to travel to their hometowns to celebrate with loved ones, making the extended break especially meaningful for millions across the country.
