ISLAMABAD: Global tech leader Google has proposed establishing a factory in Punjab for the local production of Google Chromebooks. The provincial government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has pledged full support for the initiative.
A high-level delegation from Google for Education and Tech Valley met with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in Lahore to discuss the project. The team was headed by Kevin Callis, Global Director of Google for Education, and included Tech Valley CIO Omar Farooq.
During the meeting, the delegation formally submitted the proposal to set up the Chromebook production facility in the province. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz assured the team of her government’s complete administrative and technical cooperation to make the project a success.
Focus on Digital Education and AI Integration
Discussions also covered plans to enhance digital learning in government schools and introduce artificial intelligence tools into the curriculum. Google representatives said that the upcoming Chromebooks would include three essential educational applications: Gemini, Read Along, and Canva.
They also highlighted Google for Education’s ongoing efforts in Pakistan, noting that more than 2,000 government teachers have already received digital training, with additional training programs underway.
Punjab to Become Hub for Educational Technology
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized her vision to make IT and digital literacy a key part of basic education. She said the provincial government aims to transform Punjab into a regional hub for artificial intelligence and educational technology.
Maryam Nawaz added that the government would extend full facilitation to Google in establishing the Chromebook factory, which is expected to boost the local tech manufacturing sector and promote digital education across Punjab.
