Google Messages is set to integrate WhatsApp video calling, allowing users to initiate video calls directly from the messaging app. This development was discovered through an APK teardown of the latest Google Messages version, hinting at a deeper collaboration between the two platforms.
The upcoming feature will enable users to make WhatsApp video calls seamlessly from within Google Messages. If both the sender and recipient have WhatsApp installed on their devices, a video call icon will appear in the top-right menu of the conversation screen. By tapping this icon, users will be able to start a WhatsApp video call instantly, eliminating the need to switch between apps manually.
At present, this integration is designed for one-on-one conversations. In group chats or cases where the recipient does not have WhatsApp installed, the video call option will default to Google Meet. This ensures users can still make video calls, even if WhatsApp is unavailable on the other person’s device.
Since the feature is still under development, its final functionality could change before the official release. Users may eventually have the option to select between WhatsApp and Google Meet for video calls, providing more flexibility based on their preferences and the apps installed by their contacts.
While Google has not announced a specific launch date, the feature is expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks as development progresses. This integration marks a significant step in bridging communication platforms, making video calling more accessible and convenient for users of both Google Messages and WhatsApp.
