Google has introduced two new features to its AI-powered chatbot, Gemini, aimed at enhancing coding, writing, and content consumption. The latest additions—Canvas and Audio Overview—expand Gemini’s capabilities for both developers and general users.
Canvas: A New Interactive Coding and Writing Tool
Available for Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers, Canvas provides an interactive workspace for coding and writing projects. The tool allows users to generate, refine, and share content seamlessly across web and mobile platforms.
According to Google, Canvas enables users to adjust text tone, length, and formatting with simple prompts while supporting real-time collaboration by exporting content directly to Google Docs.
“Within Canvas, you can generate and preview HTML/React code and web app prototypes, visualizing your design instantly,” Google stated in a blog post. The tool also allows developers to modify and preview elements like input fields and call-to-action buttons before sharing their work.
By reducing the need to switch between applications, Google claims Canvas streamlines the coding process for both beginners and experienced developers.
Audio Overview: AI-Powered Summarization
Expanding on Google’s NotebookLM, Audio Overview converts written materials into AI-generated podcast-style discussions. Users can upload documents via the Gemini prompt bar to generate downloadable and shareable audio summaries.
Currently, the feature supports multiple file formats but is limited to English, with Google planning to expand language support soon.
“Audio Overview enhances learning in a fun and productive way,” the company stated, highlighting its potential to help users process class notes, research papers, lengthy emails, and reports more efficiently.
These new features underscore Google’s efforts to compete with OpenAI, which launched a similar Canvas tool for ChatGPT in October, further intensifying the race among AI giants.
