Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to create numerous new job opportunities, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who dismissed concerns about AI taking away jobs. Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Wednesday, Pichai highlighted how technological evolution has consistently driven the creation of new roles.
Citing a study by an MIT professor, Pichai noted that 60% of the jobs created since 1940 were in fields that previously didnโt exist. โThereโs a constant evolution we go through. In the year 2000, no one imagined there would be a career like a YouTube creator. Today, millions of creators exist as small businesses generating value and employing others,โ he explained.
The Role of AI in Different Fields
Pichai emphasized how AI has impacted various domains, including sports. โAI has been the best chess player in the world for a long time, yet chess is more popular than ever, with more people playing the game today,โ he said. He also stressed that while AI will advance, human experiences and interactions will continue to hold significant value.
Recognizing the UAEโs Leadership in AI
During his conversation with Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, Pichai praised the UAEโs foresight in adopting AI technologies. โThe UAE continues to surprise me. Appointing a national AI Minister in 2017 was a visionary move. No technology will impact economies as much as AI,โ he remarked.
Pichai urged governments to invest in infrastructure and upskill their populations, citing the UAE as a leading example. โThe UAE has been at the forefront of not just building computers and data centers but also focusing on skilling its people for the future. This transition requires significant effort, and other governments should follow this example,โ he added.
Balancing Opportunities and Risks
While acknowledging the vast potential of AI, Pichai stressed the importance of managing its risks responsibly. โAI is a powerful, self-improving technology. Governments and organizations need to develop the ability to evaluate and address risks while establishing global standards. Investing in risk management infrastructure is essential,โ he said.
He also highlighted the need for a cultural shift to embrace innovation. โFirms and governments should foster an optimistic culture of curiosity, where taking risks is encouraged, and failure is not punished. This approach drives ambitious projects that often yield valuable outcomes.โ
Tackling Deepfake Content
Pichai revealed that Google is actively working on technology to detect deepfake content. โWe are developing and open-sourcing tools for watermarking image generation and detecting deepfakes. Collaboration with other companies to establish industry standards is crucial. While innovation should be encouraged, there are areas where regulation will be necessary,โ he explained.
In conclusion, Pichai underscored the transformative potential of AI while urging governments and organizations to prepare for its widespread impact through investments in infrastructure, skilling, and responsible innovation.
