Googleโs Major Investment in Pakistanโs Tech Sector
Google has officially started manufacturing Chromebooks in Pakistan, marking a historic milestone for the nationโs growing technology industry. Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, announced that Google will produce around 600,000 Chromebooks every year at its new facility in Haripur. The move signifies a major step forward in attracting global tech giants to Pakistan and strengthening local IT manufacturing.
Speaking to the media, the minister confirmed that Google has completed its registration in Pakistan and will soon open a local office. She emphasized that under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifโs leadership, Pakistanโs collaboration with major international technology and social media companies has entered a dynamic new phase. This partnership aims to enhance digital infrastructure and support innovation-led growth in the country.
Boost for Education and Local Manufacturing
The Chromebook manufacturing project has been launched as a public-private partnership between Google, the Ministry of Defence Production, and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). A local company is also part of this initiative, which is expected to significantly strengthen Pakistanโs IT hardware production capabilities.
Minister Shaza Fatima highlighted that the project will focus on producing affordable, high-quality devices for the education sector, helping students access modern learning tools. She added that such collaborations reflect the growing confidence of global investors in Pakistanโs economy. The initiative will also promote technology transfer, introduce international best practices, and create new job opportunities for skilled workers in the local tech ecosystem.
