Protests have erupted across major world capitals after Israeli forces intercepted vessels from the Global Samoud Flotilla bound for Gaza. Demonstrations occurred in Mexico City, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and several European and Middle Eastern cities. Protesters demanded the immediate release of detained humanitarian activists.
Argentine Legislator Among the Detained
In Buenos Aires, large crowds gathered to call for the release of Celeste Fierro, a legislator-elect for the Workers’ Socialist Movement. Fierro was aboard the Adara ship, one of the flotilla’s vessels, intercepted by the Israeli navy.
Sergio Garcia, speaking at the protest, said the detained activists faced a difficult situation. He urged Argentina’s Foreign Ministry to intervene to secure Fierro’s safe return.
201 Activists From 37 Countries Detained
Flotilla spokesperson Saif Abukeshek confirmed that Israeli forces intercepted 13 vessels and detained more than 201 activists from 37 countries. These included 30 participants from Spain, 22 from Italy, 21 from Türkiye, and 12 from Malaysia.
Despite the arrests, Abukeshek stated the mission continues. He noted that around 30 ships were still advancing toward Gaza. “They are determined, motivated, and doing everything within their hand to arrive together in Gaza,” he declared.
Flotilla Vows to Continue Mission
The Global Samoud Flotilla emphasized that Israeli actions would not halt their efforts. In a statement, the group said, “We continue on our mission to break the siege and open a humanitarian corridor.”
Originally, the flotilla set sail with about 40 vessels. While 13 were intercepted, nearly 30 boats reportedly escaped Israeli forces and remain just 85 kilometers from Gaza’s coast.
Expanding Protests Across Continents
Protests have since spread across Europe and the Middle East. Demonstrations occurred in Italy, Greece, Germany, Brussels, and Tunisia. In Türkiye, protesters gathered outside U.S. and Israeli embassies, denouncing the naval raids and demanding accountability.
Activists worldwide have framed the interception as an attack on humanitarian aid and international solidarity with Palestinians under siege.
