Germany’s largest-ever pro-Palestinian protest took place in Berlin this weekend, highlighting the widening gap between public sentiment and the government’s unwavering pro-Israel stance. The demonstration occurred against the backdrop of Israel’s nearly two-year military campaign in Gaza, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
100,000 Join “All Eyes on Gaza” Rally
Organizers reported that more than 100,000 people flooded central Berlin for the “All Eyes on Gaza” rally. Protesters condemned Israel’s actions as “genocide” and accused the German government of minimizing the atrocities. Coordinated by around 50 organizations—including Amnesty International, Medico International, The Left party, and various pro-Palestinian groups—the protest demanded a halt to German arms exports to Israel and EU sanctions against Tel Aviv.
Strong Calls for Action: Germany’s historic Pro-Palestine protest seeks an end to support for the Gaza butcher
Chants of “Free Palestine” and “Long live international solidarity” echoed through the streets, while placards read “Stop the massacre” and “Freedom for Palestine.” The Left party leader Ines Schwerdtner directly criticized German leaders for “remaining silent about genocide” and “making themselves complicit.” Berlin police deployed about 1,800 officers, with reports of several arrests during scuffles.
UN and Global Scrutiny
The protest followed a UN inquiry that concluded Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. Israel-based human rights organizations and the International Court of Justice have also pursued similar investigations. UN agencies warn of famine threatening large sections of Gaza’s population.
German Policy vs. Public Sentiment
Despite historic ties with Israel and ongoing military support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, German public opinion is shifting. A survey revealed that over 60 percent of German voters believe Israel’s actions amount to genocide. While Chancellor Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul recently criticized Israel’s blockade and military offensive, they refrained from labeling the campaign genocide. Unlike France, the UK, Australia, and Canada, Germany still does not recognize the State of Palestine.
A Turning Point?
The Berlin protest underscored growing public frustration and solidarity with Palestinians. With Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting more than 66,000 deaths since October 2023, pressure on Germany’s policymakers continues to mount. Whether this unprecedented public mobilization leads to a shift in foreign policy remains uncertain, but the political costs of ignoring sentiment are rising.
