Germany has announced a new pledge of $131 million (EUR 114 million) in development assistance to help Pakistan strengthen its climate resilience and energy transition initiatives. The commitment was made during the latest bilateral development cooperation talks held in Islamabad, signaling continued collaboration between the two nations in addressing climate and economic challenges.
Focus on Renewable Energy and Economic Transformation
The pledged funding—comprising both financial and technical assistance—will be utilized during the current fiscal year. The discussions were co-chaired by Muhammad Humair Karim, Secretary at Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Christine Toetzke, Director-General at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Senior diplomats and officials from both countries also participated in the negotiations.
According to officials, the German assistance will play a key role in accelerating Pakistan’s shift toward renewable energy sources, expanding social protection programs, and creating sustainable employment opportunities. The initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader development framework, URAAN Pakistan, which focuses on green growth, energy efficiency, and inclusive economic reforms.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation for a Sustainable Future
Christine Toetzke commended Pakistan’s recent economic reform measures and reaffirmed Germany’s support for the country’s ongoing efforts to tackle climate change and ensure sustainable development. She emphasized that Germany remains committed to long-term cooperation aimed at building resilience, reducing carbon emissions, and improving the livelihoods of vulnerable communities.
At the conclusion of the talks, both sides signed the Summary Record, officially formalizing the financial commitments and strategic priorities outlined in the discussions. The next round of bilateral development cooperation talks between Pakistan and Germany is scheduled to take place in Berlin in 2027, continuing the partnership on green energy, climate action, and inclusive growth.
