Five U.S. soldiers were injured in a shooting incident on Wednesday at Fort Stewart, a major Army base located in the state of Georgia. According to Army officials, the suspected shooter was apprehended, and the situation is now under control.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. Fort Stewart officials confirmed the attack via a Facebook post, stating that the installation was immediately placed under lockdown due to what was described as an โactive shooter incident.โ The lockdown was implemented shortly after 11:04 a.m. Eastern Time, following an emergency call received at 10:56 a.m. Law enforcement and military police swiftly responded to the scene, leading to the arrest of the suspected gunman by 11:35 a.m.
The five wounded soldiers were initially treated on-site by emergency responders before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital for further medical care. While the extent of their injuries has not been publicly disclosed, base officials reassured the public that there is โno active threat to the communityโ following the apprehension of the suspect.
Fort Stewart is home to the 3rd Infantry Division, which issued a separate advisory through social media, urging personnel to shelter in place and to secure all windows and doors until the situation was resolved. The base, located roughly 225 miles southeast of Atlanta and about 40 miles from Savannah, is one of the largest Army installations in the eastern United States.
In response to the shooting, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences via a post on X (formerly Twitter). โWe are saddened by todayโs tragedy at Fort Stewart. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and all who serve,โ he stated, urging fellow Georgians to keep the injured soldiers in their thoughts.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident and is closely monitoring the situation from Washington.
As investigations continue, officials have yet to release further details regarding the identity or motive of the shooter. The Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is expected to lead the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
