France and Britain are advocating for a one-month ceasefire in Ukraine, limited to air and sea operations, following crisis talks in London, French President Emmanuel Macron revealed on Sunday.
In an interview with Le Figaro, Macron clarified that the truce would not initially extend to ground combat due to the challenges of monitoring compliance along the vast front line. Peacekeepers could be deployed at a later stage, though he ruled out European troops on Ukrainian soil in the coming weeks.
Macron also urged European nations to boost defense spending to 3–3.5% of GDP, citing Russia’s intensified militarization and shifting U.S. priorities.
“For three years, the Russians have allocated 10% of their GDP to defense,” he noted. “We must prepare for what comes next.”
