Former Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmad returned to Pakistan on Thursday after being released from Israeli custody, following diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan and Jordan. He was detained last week while participating in a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza.
Warm Reception at Islamabad Airport
Senator Mushtaq arrived at Islamabad Airport, where he was welcomed by party workers, supporters, and well-wishers. The Embassy of Pakistan in Jordan had earlier confirmed his release and safe departure, following instructions from Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The Foreign Office stated that all arrangements for his return were swiftly coordinated, and Foreign Minister Dar also personally thanked Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi during a phone call for Jordanโs support in the matter.
International Flotilla Intercepted by Israel
Senator Mushtaq had joined a rights-led flotilla that set sail in late August to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The convoy, which included hundreds of international activists, was intercepted by Israeli forces. Over 450 participants were detained, though most have since been deported.
The flotilla was part of a broader humanitarian campaign aimed at highlighting the ongoing siege and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israeli military actions have so far claimed the lives of over 66,000 Palestinians, including many women and children.
Both Pakistan and Jordan have reiterated their commitment to continued high-level cooperation for regional peace and stability, with Pakistan reaffirming its solidarity with the people of Palestine.
