Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Kevin Johnson died from blunt head trauma and stab wounds, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, which ruled his death a homicide.
Johnson, 55, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning after being found unconscious at a homeless encampment in Los Angeles, officials said. The case remains under active investigation.
Authorities believe Johnson had been living at the encampment at the time of his death. Friends told investigators that Johnson faced ongoing health challenges later in life, which contributed to his circumstances.
NFL Career
Johnson was selected in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Over his professional career, he played for the Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, and Philadelphia Eagles.
During his two seasons with Philadelphia, Johnson recorded 43 tackles, seven sacks, and returned a fumble for a touchdown. He later appeared in 15 games for the Raiders in 1997.
After his NFL career, Johnson continued playing football in the Arena Football League, suiting up for teams in Orlando and Los Angeles.
Early Life
A Los Angeles native, Johnson played college football at Texas Southern University, where he developed into a standout defensive lineman before entering the NFL.
Authorities have not released details about suspects or arrests as the investigation continues.
