Flood alert issued for Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir due to heavy rain, glacier melt; NDMA urges emergency preparedness.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood warning for Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as the region braces for heavy rainfall and potential glacial melting between July 28 and July 31. The advisory follows forecasts of intense monsoon activity in the region, which could significantly raise river levels and cause flash floods.
According to the NDMA, key areas at risk include Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Shigar, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Bagh. The situation is particularly concerning in the Chitral Valley, where a surge in river flow is expected in Boni and Rishan, increasing the risk of flooding.
Urban Flooding, Landslides Likely; Authorities Placed on High Alert
Beyond river flooding, urban flooding is also a major concern for cities such as Muzaffarabad and Bagh, while landslides may occur in mountainous and hilly areas due to persistent downpours. The NDMA has instructed all relevant authorities, including Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and local administrations, to remain vigilant and ensure that rescue teams, heavy machinery, and relief supplies are pre-positioned and ready.
The agency stressed the importance of preventive measures to mitigate the impact of any potential disasters during the upcoming days of unstable weather.
Heavy Rains Forecast Across Pakistan as Monsoon Intensifies
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), strong monsoon currents are entering upper Pakistan, affecting Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and AJK. The downpour is expected to persist until Thursday, possibly triggering flooding, overflowing of rivers and streams, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
In Balochistan, heavy rainfall is forecast at scattered locations from July 28 to 31, while Sindh is likely to experience showers on Wednesday and Thursday. The NDMA and PMD are closely monitoring the situation and may issue further advisories as needed.
