LAHORE: Another female medical student committed suicide, prompting a probe. According to police, the 22-year-old final-year student committed suicide at Fatima Jinnah Medical College in Lahore.
The administration confirmed the formation of a five-member committee headed by Professor Dr. Abdul Hameed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to college officials, the student, identified as Fariha, was appearing in her final-year examinations when the tragedy occurred. Her second-semester paper was held on Friday, February 19. The administration stated that she sustained a severe brain injury and could not survive despite medical attention. Subsequently, a preliminary fact-finding report was compiled and submitted to the relevant medical board, outlining initial details of the case.
Fariha was originally from Kashmir and had been residing in Lahore with her father prior to the incident. Officials said the inquiry committee will examine academic, personal, and administrative aspects to determine whether any contributing factors were overlooked.
Classes suspended amid concern on campus
Meanwhile, the college administration has temporarily suspended educational activities. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure in anticipation of possible protests by students, particularly female classmates who expressed shock and grief following the news.
Authorities said campus security and administrative staff remain on alert to maintain order while the inquiry proceeds. Furthermore, officials emphasized that the committee will conduct a thorough and impartial review, after which its findings will be shared with relevant stakeholders.
The incident has sparked concern within academic circles, with observers calling for stronger student support systems and mental health safeguards.
The college administration has urged restraint, saying the students and parents must wait for the outcome of the ongoing probe.
