ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is set to travel to the United States this week, marking his second visit in under two months, according to foreign media reports on Thursday.
Field Marshal will attend the retirement ceremony of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) chief General Michael Kurilla, who was recently honoured with Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) during his visit to Pakistan on July 26, in recognition of his positive stance towards Pakistan. The award was conferred by President Asif Ali Zardari.
So far, there has been no official word from Pakistani authorities on whether Field Marshal Munir will hold any additional meetings during his U.S. trip.
Background of Previous Visit
Field Marshal Munir previously visited Washington in June, where he held a rare one-on-one meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House Cabinet Room. The meeting was attended by U.S. Secretary of State Senator Marco Rubio, Special Representative for Middle Eastern Affairs Steve Witkoff, and Pakistanโs National Security Adviser.
The visit came in the aftermath of a brief but intense Pakistan-India military confrontation, triggered by Indiaโs cross-border strikes allegedly targeting militants linked to the Pahalgam attack in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Pakistan responded forcefully, downing six Indian fighter jets, including three Rafales, and launched Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos. The 87-hour conflict resulted in the martyrdom of 40 civilians and 13 armed forces personnel in Pakistan.
During the White House meeting, Field Marshal Munir praised President Trump for his โconstructive and result-oriented roleโ in defusing the crisis. Trump, in turn, commended Munirโs leadership and clarity during a volatile regional situation.
Expanded Bilateral Agenda
Beyond security, the leaders explored wider avenues for cooperation, including:
- Trade and economic development
- Energy and mineral exploration
- Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies
- Cryptocurrency and digital innovation
The discussions reportedly laid the groundwork for a new Pakistan-U.S. trade agreement, which was finalised shortly afterward.
Pakistan-U.S. Trade Breakthrough
The agreement was announced following a meeting between Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Trade Representative, attended by Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh and Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul.
While full details remain undisclosed, Pakistanโs Ministry of Finance confirmed that the deal includes:
- Tariff reductions on key Pakistani exports
- A renewed commitment to bilateral economic cooperation
President Trump later confirmed the agreement on social media, revealing that both countries would collaborate on developing Pakistanโs untapped oil reserves, and were in the process of selecting a leading oil company for the partnership.
This energy partnership is expected to extend into minerals, information technology, and other strategic sectors, deepening long-term ties between Islamabad and Washington.
