Unilever has decided to change the โFair and Lovelyโ beauty cream to โGlow and Lovelyโ. The product which gained popularity as a skin whitening cream is now simply a skincare cream after facing global backlash for a racist brand motive.
The recent Black Lives Matter movement alongside bringing attention to many crucial issues dawned attention towards fairness creams upon which many fairness creams, including Johnson & Johnson and PepsiCo, decided to alter their brand image.
Unileverโs โFair and Lovelyโ dominate the market followed by Loreal and P&G (Procter and Gamble). Sunny Jain, president of Unileverโs beauty and personal care division says
โWe recognize that the use of the words โfairโ, โwhiteโ, and โlightโ suggest a singular ideal of beauty that we donโt think is right, and we want to address thisโ.
