PMD disapproves earthquake predictions in Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) denied information about earthquakes currently circulating in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) denied speculations about the possibility of devastating earthquakes in Pakistan. PMD shared a document in which they identified earthquake predictions as false information.

The devastating earthquake in Turkey created panic in Pakistan. News that “the earthquake with the same magnitude may occur in Pakistan in few days” was going viral on social media. PMD claimed that there is no scientific relationship between earthquakes in Pakistan and Turkey.

Social media users were reporting that a significant earthquake is predicted to occur in Pakistan and India in the next few days. The devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey sparked alarm in Pakistan. The PMD underlined, however, that there is no scientific link between the Turkish earthquake and Pakistan.

In an interview, Director Zahid Rafi of the National Seismic Monitoring Centre claimed that earthquakes were a natural occurrence. He further said that “no one can predict when and where an earthquake will hit next.”

A statement reported by PMD: “The possibility of the occurrence of a major earthquake in Pakistan and surrounding countries is always there. Yet the timeline of happening is beyond the reach of existing technology.”

PMD is running its own seismic monitoring network comprising thirty remote monitoring stations. It is recording earthquakes every day. Furthermore, these quakes are of small to medium range.
Pakistan and neighboring countries like Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan have experienced many damaging earthquakes in past. These countries are earthquake-prone countries. PMD seismic monitoring network is recording more than 100 quakes every day.
