Gaza โ Eleven children who were evacuated as premature infants from Gaza during intense fighting have reunited with their families after nearly two years, in an emotional return facilitated by a United Nations-backed mission.
The children were among 29 newborns transferred from Al Shifa Hospital in November 2023, when escalating conflict forced their evacuation to Egypt. At the time, only medical staff accompanied them, as parents were unable to cross the border.
Families described the reunions as deeply emotional, marking the end of prolonged separation. One mother said she could finally hold her daughter after years apart, calling the moment a โnew beginning.โ
Emotional Reunions Mark Painful Chapterโs End
Meanwhile, many parents expressed concern that their children might not recognize them after such a long separation. Some toddlers, now older, are gradually reconnecting with their families.
Doctors confirmed that seven of the evacuated infants died during their stay in Egypt. Others remain outside Gaza with relatives. For returning families, the reunions brought both relief and grief, as many had suffered losses during the war.
Furthermore, several families now live in temporary shelters after their homes were destroyed. Despite hardship, parents voiced hope for rebuilding relationships with their children over time.
Healthcare Crisis Highlights Ongoing Challenges
In addition, the reunions come amid a severe healthcare crisis in Gaza. Medical officials reported widespread destruction of hospitals and neonatal units during the conflict, leaving limited facilities for vulnerable infants.
According to hospital authorities, shortages of essential medicines, infant formula, and respiratory support continue to affect patient care. More than half of basic medicines and a significant portion of medical supplies remain unavailable.
Consequently, healthcare providers warn that rebuilding medical infrastructure remains critical to addressing ongoing needs and preventing further loss of life.
