Europe is not ready to counter potential Russian drone attacks, according to EU Defense and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius. He issued the warning on Monday while urging the bloc to integrate Ukraineโs battle-tested capabilities. His remarks highlighted rising concerns within the 27-nation bloc about persistent Russian aggression.
EU leaders are scrambling to reinforce air defense systems after NATO jets shot down several Russian drones over Poland in September. The incident embarrassed regional authorities and intensified criticism of Europeโs slow response to drone warfare. Officials now admit that the continent faces significant gaps in surveillance and interception systems.
Kubilius questioned the delay in Europeโs recognition of the threat. He asked why it took more than two years and multiple drone provocations for Europe to realize its unpreparedness. He stressed that Europe must detect and destroy Russian drones using cost-effective tools. He also warned that Russia continues learning and adapting its drone strategies, putting additional pressure on European defenses.
NATO Reinforces Eastern Flank
NATO has deployed more reinforcements to its eastern flank following the Polish drone intrusion. The alliance is also rolling out additional drone defense systems. The deployment followed a separate incident in which a Polish missile reportedly struck a home during the air incursion. The mishap exposed operational vulnerabilities and spurred renewed urgency across the region.
European authorities plan to build an independent drone defense system, but the timeline remains uncertain. Officials expect that the project will take years to complete. The lack of a unified strategy continues to hinder progress as member states debate funding and technical frameworks.
Kubilius Calls for Ukraineโs Inclusion
Kubilius insisted that Europe must integrate Ukraineโs experienced military forces into its broader defense architecture. He warned that excluding Ukraine would be a historic mistake. He said such an error would leave both Europe and Ukraine weaker at a critical moment. He urged leaders to act before Russian capabilities evolve further.
The push to strengthen EU defenses comes as intelligence agencies warn of new risks. Analysts believe Russian President Vladimir Putin may consider targeting a NATO country in the coming years. European officials fear that slow modernization could leave the continent exposed to future Russian aggression.
