Etihad Rail, the developer of the United Arab Emirates’ national railway network, has confirmed that passenger train services will officially begin in 2026. This milestone project aligns with the UAE’s vision for a modern, integrated, and sustainable transport system.
Connecting Cities Across the UAE
According to Etihad Rail officials, the new passenger network will link 11 cities and regions across the country. The route will extend from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the east, passing through Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ruwais, and Al Dhaid.
This wide coverage is expected to transform daily travel, offering a faster, safer, and more convenient alternative to road transport.
Reduced Travel Times
One of the most notable benefits of the project is the significant reduction in travel time. The journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai will take only 57 minutes, while Abu Dhabi to Ruwais will require just 70 minutes. Travel to Fujairah will be completed in 105 minutes, making long-distance commuting far more efficient.
Passenger Comfort and Safety
Each train will have the capacity to carry up to 400 passengers. Multiple daily services will run to ensure smooth travel options. Onboard facilities will include dedicated areas for working, reading, and relaxation.
Safety remains a top priority. The passenger trains will run on fully segregated tracks to minimize risks and guarantee reliability. Additionally, Etihad Rail plans to adopt a “digital tickets first” system, making travel more convenient and eco-friendly.
Smart and Accessible Station Planning
Deputy CEO Azza Alsuwaidi highlighted that careful station planning is essential to building an accessible railway network. Stations will be supported by integrated first- and last-mile solutions, developed in partnership with municipalities, local transport providers, and technology platforms.
These efforts will make stations highly connected, ensuring passengers can seamlessly continue their journey after disembarking.
Future High-Speed Rail Plans
Beyond the upcoming passenger services, Etihad Rail has ambitious plans to introduce a high-speed rail line between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Trains on this line will reach speeds of up to 350 km/h, reducing travel time between the two cities to just 30 minutes.
Economic Impact of the Project
The railway project is expected to generate long-term economic benefits. According to projections, Etihad Rail will contribute around AED 145 billion to the UAE’s GDP over the next 50 years.
This impact reflects not only improved connectivity but also job creation, tourism growth, and advancements in sustainable mobility.
Transforming the UAE’s Transport Landscape
With its passenger services on track for 2026, Etihad Rail is set to transform how residents and visitors travel across the UAE. By offering a safe, reliable, and modern rail network, the project will strengthen the country’s global standing in next-generation transport solutions.
