Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Basel Adra, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, in Istanbul on Monday. The meeting took place behind closed doors at the Dolmabahce Presidential Office. Erdogan congratulated Adra on the film’s international success and its focus on Palestinian life under Israeli occupation.
Erdogan Condemns Israeli Actions in Hebron
Erdogan said the most brutal face of the Israeli occupation appears on the southern hills of Hebron. He noted that individuals who document abuses become immediate targets. He also offered condolences for Awdah Hathaleen, Adra’s close friend who was killed by Israeli settlers. Erdogan praised the filmmakers’ courage in producing the documentary.
Film Industry Criticism and Global Support
Erdogan said the Palestinian tragedy remains underrepresented in global cinema. He argued that structural alignment within the film industry limits portrayals of Palestinian suffering. He added that Adra experienced this censorship firsthand. Furthermore, he highlighted last year’s shows of solidarity at the Oscars and Cannes, saying messages, attire, and protests reflected support for Gaza. He said this year’s Academy Awards demonstrated an even stronger stance.
Call for Continued Advocacy Through Art
Erdogan stressed that art must pursue truth and raise awareness. He described No Other Land as important in awakening global conscience. He urged Adra to continue his work so that public support for Palestine remains strong. He also commended the documentary’s entire team and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people.
