Qarz-e-Jaan Writer Rabia Razzaque Reflects on the Drama’s Deep Themes and Social Impact

Rabia Razzaque, the writer behind the widely acclaimed drama Qarz-e-Jaan, has opened up about the emotional layers and social commentary embedded in the story, which has struck a chord with audiences for its powerful performances and thought-provoking themes.

In a recent interview with a private media outlet, Razzaque revealed the inspiration behind the narrative and the messages she aimed to convey through the drama’s complex characters.

One of the central themes, she shared, was the resilience and emotional needs of widows — an often overlooked segment of society. Through the characters of Bisma and Asim, Razzaque explored the idea that love, companionship, and emotional support are not bound by age. “As people grow older, their need for understanding deepens. Unfortunately, society tends to dismiss the emotional lives of widows,” she explained.

Another pivotal theme was women’s empowerment, particularly through the lens of career and independence. Razzaque pointed to Nashwa’s character as a representation of how a woman’s professional life can become a source of inner strength and identity. “A woman’s self-worth shouldn’t be tied solely to relationships — ambition and independence are equally valuable,” she said. “Empowered women and driven youth are the foundation of a forward-moving society.”

The drama also delves into the consequences of flawed parenting, especially through the character of Ammar Bakhtiyar. Razzaque described Ammar as a tragic figure shaped not only by his own tendencies but also by a toxic upbringing. “His downfall was the result of poor parenting — his grandmother’s misplaced love and his father’s unchecked behavior played a huge role. Parenting isn’t just about love, it’s about guidance,” she noted.

With standout performances from Yumna Zaidi, Usama Khan, and Deepak Perwani, Qarz-e-Jaan has gone beyond the realm of entertainment, offering viewers a poignant reflection of real-life societal issues. For Razzaque, the goal was never just to tell a story — it was to spark conversation, challenge perceptions, and ultimately, hold up a mirror to society.
