Though it has been 22 years since she died Madam Noor Jehan remains timeless! something that resonates today as strongly as it did when it was first released.
Malika-e-Tarannum, The melody Queen left her fans with her mellifluous voice and fond memories on December 23 for eternal peace in the year 2000.
In 1947, Noor Jehan moved to Pakistan. Here earned the honor of becoming the first female film director of Pakistani cinema with the film ‘Chann Wey’ in 1951.
She started her musical career at the young age of six when her family moved to Calcutta where she received musical training and became a child star in Urdu and Punjabi movies.
Growing up her unique range of voice transcended her across social, geographical and cultural barriers. She remains widely admired by music lovers across the globe.
Malika-e-Tarrannum’s national patriotic songs, during the 1965 Pak-India war, are an important part of our national history.
Mujhse Pehli Si Muhabbat’ holds the distinction of being a revolutionary song. Originally written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz Noor Jehan sang it at Faiz’s request to celebrate his release from prison. Faiz would later credit her as the co-author of his poem because he believed no one could sing it with such perfection.
She was a hardworking artist and represented a very strong and impressive image of Pakistani women to the world. Thousands of her students and followers are carrying forward her legacy.
She received many awards for her acting and singing capabilities ‚ including the highest Pakistani honor in entertainment‚ Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (The Pride of Performance) in 1966 and the President Award in 1957.
After a long and celebrated career, Madam Noor Jehan passed away of a heart failure at the age of 74.
