Netflix issued legal notice over 15-year-old episode of The Big Bang Theory that ‘insulted’ Madhuri Dixit

Political analyst Mithun Vijay Kumar in India sent a legal notice to Netflix regarding defamatory remarks made against Madhuri Dixit in an episode of The Big Bang Theory, a popular show created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady that originally aired on CBS from 2007 to 2019.

Although Netflix did not produce the sitcom, it is available for streaming on its platform in countries like India and Pakistan. Kumar is requesting that the streaming service remove the episode in question from their library.

The actors Jim Parsons and Kunal Nayyar had a disagreement in the episode titled “The Bad Fish Paradigm,” which aired on September 22, 2008.

Jim Parsons played the role of Sheldon Cooper, while Kunal Nayyar portrayed Raj Koothrapalli.

During their argument about Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit, Sheldon calls Rai “a poor man’s Madhuri Dixit,” and Raj responds by saying, “Aishwarya Rai is a goddess; by comparison, Madhuri Dixit is a leprous prostitute.”

Kumar demanded the removal of the episode Defaming Madhuri

Kumar demanded the removal of the episode from the streaming platform, stating that it was offensive and defamatory, and also accused the show of promoting sexism and misogyny.

He plans on taking further action if Netflix does not respond to his demands.

Also, Kumar shared the notice on Twitter.

He expressed that he was deeply disturbed by the dialogue and found it highly derogatory and offensive towards Indian culture and women.

In his statement, Kumar emphasized the importance of holding companies like Netflix accountable for their actions and ensuring they are sensitive to the cultural values and sentiments of the communities they serve.

He thinks that streaming service providers should take responsibility carefully.

They must see the content they provide on their platforms.

They should prevent derogatory, offensive, or defamatory content.

Kumar felt bad seeing the Episode and the content.

Moreover, He found it offensive, hurtful, and lacking in regard for her dignity.

He stressed that streaming service providers must take such issues seriously and act quickly to address any instances of offensive or defamatory content.

Having clear guidelines and implementing rigorous screening processes for all published content can prevent such content from being aired on platforms.

Moreover, Kumar argued that streaming services have a significant influence over the content consumed by millions of individuals, and with this influence comes a responsibility to ensure that the content they offer is respectful, inclusive, and free from harmful stereotypes.

Also, He hopes that this incident serves as a wake-up call to all streaming service providers to work towards creating a more equitable and respectful media landscape.
