Depp, Heard Defamation Lawsuits Conclude Without A Verdict

An opinion post written by Heard in the Washington Post about domestic violence in December 2018 is at the heart of the legal dispute.

Both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard sued one other for millions of dollars for defamation. Now, the jury deliberating the verdict of two cases on Tuesday has still not decided after deliberating it for many hours.

On Wednesday, the seven-person jury in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia is set up to begin deliberations.

The seven-member panel questioned Judge Penney Azcarate if they should evaluate the full story or simply the headline during Tuesday’s deliberations. As stated in the headline, Heard “spoke out against sexual assault – and faced our culture’s fury.”

When it comes time to decide on a verdict, Azcarate plans to advise the jury to examine the headline.

Six weeks of evidence by Heard’s counsel claimed that she had been truthful and that her views were protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Audience members heard recordings of the couple’s confrontations and saw graphic photographs of Depp’s bleeding finger throughout the case. He said that a vodka bottle thrown at him in 2015 cut off the top of his finger.

Heard claims Depp sexually attacked her that night with a liquor bottle despite her denials that she injured Depp’s finger. She said she merely hit him to protect her sister.

The couple’s tumultuous relationship was extensively publicised through social media, attracting a big audience eager to learn more about it.

When Heard branded herself “a public person symbolising domestic violence” in an opinion article in a newspaper, 58-year-old actor Johnny Depp sued for $50 million, claiming that she had defamed him by calling herself a “public figure”. When Depp’s lawyer termed her allegations a “hoax,” Heard, 36, counter-sued for $100 million, alleging that Depp slandered her.

Depp has maintained that Heard was the one who became aggressive in their relationship and that he has struck nobody else.

In 2011, while shooting The Rum Diary, Depp and Heard became engaged. They married in February of that year. Two years later, the divorce was formalised.

Because the Washington Post is printed in Fairfax County, Virginia, Depp’s attorneys filed the US complaint there.

Here, the newspaper is not a party.

An opinion post written by Heard in the Washington Post about domestic violence in December 2018 is at the heart of the legal dispute. Although Depp’s name was omitted from the piece, his attorney told jurors that the article’s allusion to Depp was obvious.

Depp said that Heard’s accusations had cost him “everything.” Actor Johnny Depp has been replaced in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The Sun, the British newspaper that called Depp a “wife abuser,” Depp lost a libel battle against them less than two years ago. A London High Court judge found him guilty of assaulting Heard frequently.
