SEOUL: BTS member V, also known as Taehyung, has ignited significant controversy within the ARMY fandom following a recent Instagram post featuring a series of old photos, one of which included a bag of McDonald’s fries.
The backlash stems from McDonald’s association with the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement, which targets companies linked to Israel due to its military actions in Gaza. The controversy intensified after McDonald’s began donating free meals to the Israeli army.
V’s post has led to heated reactions, with many fans condemning him for perceived insensitivity. Critics argue that showcasing McDonald’s—an establishment now associated with supporting Israel—during a period of heightened violence in Gaza is tone-deaf.
One fan tweeted, “Children of Gaza are eating tree leaves while Taehyung flaunts eating the brand that directly funds the starvation and killing of these children.” Another user expressed frustration, stating, “People in Palestine are being murdered and y’all are worried about Taehyung getting canceled?”
Some followers have accused V of being “tone deaf,” with one tweet reading, “What level of tone-deaf are you on to post this brand after almost 1 year of genocide, Kim Taehyung?? Speechless.” The criticism centers on the perception that V’s choice of brand reflects a lack of awareness regarding the ongoing conflict.
However, a smaller segment of the ARMY has defended V, with hashtags like #WeLoveYouTaehyung and #BORAHAETaehyung trending. Supporters argue that the backlash is excessive and unwarranted. One fan countered, “Most of you only saw the brand. You didn’t notice he’s showing 7 fries—4 hyungs (long) and 3 maknaes (short). Your hate blinds you. WE LOVE YOU TAEHYUNG.”
The controversy has sparked questions about how BTS’s label, HYBE, and V will address the issue. As the debate continues, it remains uncertain whether V will delete the post or if HYBE will issue an official statement regarding the matter.
