Hollywood actress Emma Stone has sparked intrigue at the Venice Film Festival, openly sharing that she believes in the alien theory while promoting her upcoming film Bugonia.
The Oscar-winner revealed that she aligns with the late astronomer Carl Sagan’s view that it is self-centered to assume humans are the only life in the universe.
In Bugonia, Stone portrays the head of a powerful corporation who is kidnapped by conspiracy theorists convinced she is an alien threatening the planet. The film’s storyline prompted questions about her own views, and Stone said Sagan’s science and philosophy have long shaped her belief in the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia marks the third collaboration between Stone and the acclaimed filmmaker. The black comedy also stars Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, with a script penned by The Menu co-writer Will Tracy. Stone said she was drawn to the project because it addresses contemporary global challenges, combining humor with intensity, and praised Lanthimos for his talent in creating unique worlds.
Stone, who won an Academy Award for her performance in Poor Things, continues to be closely associated with Lanthimos’s visionary filmmaking, with Bugonia expected to be another significant addition to their partnership.
On a lighter note, Stone also recalled a memorable mishap from the 2011 Golden Globes, where she attended with her mother. During Vogue’s Life in Looks video series, the actress shared that her mother accidentally asked Angelina Jolie if she had any children—despite Jolie already being a mother of six with Brad Pitt at the time. Stone described the exchange as both amusing and slightly embarrassing.
She also reflected on her look from that night, admitting she wasn’t fond of her peach-colored Calvin Klein gown due to an unfortunate spray tan mishap.
