ISAMABAD: British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran addressed the interruption of his street performance in Bengaluru, hours after the police intervened mid-concert.
“We had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out beforehand. It wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though. See you at the show tonight x,” Sheeran posted on his Instagram story.
The Grammy-winning artist’s live performance on Church Street was cut short by Bengaluru Police minutes after he began singing. Authorities stated that the event lacked the necessary official approval, while Sheeran’s team maintained that it was a brief performance with prior consent.
A video circulating online shows Sheeran starting his hit song “Shape of You,” only for police to intervene and cut off his microphone within a minute of the performance.
DCP Central Bengaluru, Shekar T. Tekkannanavar, explained that a member of Sheeran’s organizing team, Chetan, had sought permission for the performance, but it was denied. The refusal was due to Church Street being a high-traffic area and an existing high court order that had already cleared out several events. Without official approval, the authorities asked Sheeran and his team to leave the location.
Sheeran is in India for his The Mathematics Tour and is scheduled to perform in Bengaluru later today. He has already performed in Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
