ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Gohar Ali Khan in the intra-party election case on December 18. The five-member bench of the ECP is set to hear the plea filed by PTI founding member Akbar S. Babar against the intra-party elections at 10 am.
The electoral watchdog has also summoned other PTI officials, including the party’s chief election commissioner Niazullah Niazi, Umar Ayub, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Yasmin Rashid, Ali Amin Gandapur, and RO central secretariat Sardar Masroof.
Previously, the ECP issued a notice to PTI in response to Akbar S. Babar’s appeal challenging the intra-party elections of the party. Akbar S. Babar had criticized the intra-party polls, describing them as a drama and expressing concerns about the party’s future and its election symbol, the ‘bat.’
It’s worth noting that Barrister Gohar Ali Khan was elected unopposed as the new chairman of PTI, replacing the incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan. The intra-party polls were held on the orders of the ECP, with voters using an online app to exercise their right to vote.
According to PTI election commissioner Niazullah Niazi, former federal minister Omar Ayub Khan was elected secretary-general of the party, and Yasmin Rashid, a jailed former provincial health minister, was elected as the party’s Punjab president.
