ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has released the schedule for a by-election to fill the Senate seat left vacant after the death of senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Senator Prof. Sajid Mir.
According to the ECP notification, polling will be held on May 29 at the Punjab Assembly building. The by-election process will formally commence with the issuance of a public notice on May 13.
Nomination papers can be filed between May 14 and 15, followed by scrutiny on May 17. Appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers may be submitted until May 20. The final list of candidates will be published on May 23, and the last date to withdraw nominations is May 24.
The ECP has appointed Provincial Election Commissioner Punjab Sharifullah as the returning officer for the election.
Other polling officials include Joint Election Commissioner (Elections) Abdul Qayyum Shinwari, Director (Admin) Zahid Subhani, Deputy Director (Elections) Basil Akram, and District Election Commissioner Nankana Sahib Roy Sultan Bhatti.
The Senate seat became vacant after the passing of Prof. Sajid Mir on May 3 at the age of 86. A respected religious scholar and seasoned politician, he had served multiple terms in the Senate. His latest term was scheduled to run until 2027.
