Tea imports fall 2% from July-May 2021-22

There was a 15.67 percent drop from 21,201 MT worth $49 million imported in May 2021 to 17,879 MT worth $48.52 million imported in May 2022

KARACHI: Tea imports in Pakistan fell by 2% between July 2021 and May of this year, showing that Pakistanis have cut down on their intake of beverages.

According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics trade statistics, 234,062 metric tonnes of tea were imported during the first 11 months of the Fiscal Year 2021-2022, which is slightly less than the 238,941 metric tonnes of tea imported during the same period of the Fiscal Year 2020-21.

Over $581 million (Rs 101 billion) of FY 21-22’s $72.3 billion total import bill was spent on tea imports this year, compared to $537 million (Rs 86 billion) from July to May 2020-21.

Kenya, Vietnam, Rwanda, Uganda and other countries provide Pakistan with the majority of its tea imports, from which Pakistan is one of the world’s leading importers.

There was a 15.67 percent drop from 21,201 MT worth $49 million imported in May 2021 to 17,879 MT worth $48.52 million imported in May 2022, according to import-export statistics.

According to the statistics, the amount of tea imported per month in April 2022 was 15,997 MT worth $45.3 million.
