Fresh Currency Notes
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced the distribution of fresh currency notes worth 27 billion rupees to commercial banks across the country in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan. This initiative aims to meet the increased demand for new banknotes, which traditionally rises during Ramadan and ahead of Eid celebrations.
According to SBP officials, the central bank has supplied these new banknotes to approximately 17,000 commercial bank branches nationwide, ensuring that people across Pakistan have easy access to crisp currency notes for their financial transactions and Eid festivities.
The distribution is part of the SBP’s annual efforts to provide clean and high-quality banknotes to the public, particularly during the festive season when the demand for fresh currency surges.
In its official statement, the State Bank emphasized that commercial banks have been given specific directives to facilitate smooth access to these new currency notes.
One of the key measures includes utilizing ATM networks effectively to ensure that the public can withdraw fresh banknotes conveniently throughout the holy month. Banks have been instructed to stock ATMs with high-quality currency to prevent shortages and avoid inconvenience to customers.
To ensure transparency and efficiency in the distribution process, the SBP has also deployed dedicated cash monitoring teams. These teams will visit various bank branches to oversee the proper implementation of the prescribed protocols for currency distribution.
They will verify whether commercial banks are following the guidelines issued by the central bank and whether the notes are reaching the public as intended.
The primary objective of this initiative is to accommodate the seasonal rise in demand for fresh currency, particularly ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. In Pakistan, it is a long-standing tradition to give Eidi—small cash gifts in new banknotes—to children, family members, and household staff during the festive period. As a result, the demand for fresh notes increases significantly in the weeks leading up to Eid.
Every year, the SBP takes measures to ensure that sufficient new banknotes are available to the public, preventing issues such as hoarding, black-market sales, and unnecessary cash shortages.
By distributing 27 billion rupees worth of fresh currency this year, the central bank aims to facilitate the public and maintain smooth cash circulation during Ramadan and Eid celebrations.
This initiative is expected to benefit millions of people across the country, particularly those who rely on cash transactions for their daily needs. The State Bank continues to emphasize the importance of a well-regulated financial system and remains committed to providing high-quality currency notes to the people of Pakistan.
