PIA Privatization
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has granted preliminary approval to the proposed roadmap for the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) automation system. Additionally, he has urged the finalization of the schedule for the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) within the next two days.
Chairing a meeting that focused on the dual aspects of PIA privatization and FBR restructuring, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led discussions to assess the progress made so far and outline the necessary steps for the upcoming phase of PIA’s privatization.
The meeting delved into detailed discussions regarding the automation of FBR, aiming for structural reforms to align with global standards. Recommendations were also considered for reducing tax rates to enhance economic competitiveness.
Former caretaker finance minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar presented a comprehensive briefing during the meeting, covering various facets of FBR’s restructuring, automation, revenue collection challenges, and the forthcoming action plan.
Notably, the participation of prominent banker Muhammad Aurangzeb via video link was acknowledged by the prime minister.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended Dr. Shamshad Akhtar’s presentation and stressed the significance of investing in modernizing the revenue and tax system. He highlighted the need for clear time frames in the implementation process.
Emphasizing the crucial role of reforms, he urged the Ministry of Law to expedite recommendations for resolving pending tax-related cases.
In the context of PIA’s privatization, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized transparency throughout the process, expressing zero tolerance for negligence or complacency.
He underscored the importance of diligence and efficiency to propel the privatization process forward.
