ISLAMABAD: Electricity tariffs across Pakistan have been reduced under the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) mechanism, according to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) today.
Karachi’s power consumers, served by K-Electric, will receive a notable reduction of Rs4.03 per unit in their July electricity bills. Meanwhile, consumers in other parts of the country will get a paltry benefit of Rs 0.50 per unit decrease.
NEPRA stated that these reductions are based on fuel charge variations for April 2025 (for K-Electric) and May 2025 (for other distribution companies). The relief will be applied to eligible consumer categories, excluding lifeline and protected domestic users, electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS), and prepaid meter consumers.
K-Electric had initially proposed a Rs4.69 per unit reduction for April, citing a decline in fuel costs. NEPRA approved a slightly lower adjustment and directed K-Electric to reflect the reduced amount separately in July’s bills, based on the actual units consumed during the month to which the adjustment applies.
Separately, the federal government last month abolished the provincial electricity duty on power bills, effective from July 1, as part of efforts to lower the financial burden on electricity users.
Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari formally informed all provincial chief ministers of the decision via an official letter, encouraging collaboration to identify alternative methods for collecting provincial levies.
The minister emphasized that the move would simplify electricity bills, making them more transparent and easier for consumers to understand by ensuring they only pay for electricity consumed, not a host of additional charges.
