ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated two major infrastructure projects in Rawalpindi on Monday, marking the completion of development works worth Rs8.77 billion aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility.
The newly inaugurated Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and the GPO Chowk Underpass on Mall Road were completed in record time with adherence to high construction standards. Both projects are expected to significantly enhance traffic flow and cut commute times across the city.
As the chief minister arrived at the ceremony, local residents greeted her with flower petals and chants of support. She acknowledged the warm reception with smiles and waves. Accompanying her were Punjab’s Provincial Minister for Communications and Works, Malik Sohaib Bherth, and Secretary C&W, Sohail Ashraf, who briefed her on the development initiatives.
Officials reported that a total of 67 road infrastructure projects covering 607 kilometers have been launched in Rawalpindi, with 51 projects already completed.
Nawaz Sharif Flyover: A Major Traffic Relief Artery
Connecting Kutchery Chowk to GT Road, Ring Road, and Chakri Interchange on the Motorway, the flyover is expected to serve over 300,000 vehicles daily, significantly reducing travel time—by over an hour in some cases—and cutting fuel costs.
The project also includes a two-kilometer-long service road and is designed to benefit residents of Gorakhpur, Adiala, Khalsa Khurd, Khalsa Kalan, Dhalan, Jarrar Camp, Dhok Awan, Singral, and surrounding areas.
GPO Chowk Underpass: Smart Traffic Solution for Mall Road
The GPO Chowk Underpass, part of a signal-free corridor extending to TM Chowk, will accommodate over 200,000 vehicles daily. Located near the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), the underpass includes a pedestrian walkway and features Rawalpindi’s first intelligent signal system.
Spanning nearly two kilometers, it provides direct access to National Highway N-5 via Kashmir Road, improving connectivity for areas including CMH, MH, Saddar Bazaar, the Railway Station, and other key institutions.
CM’s Vision for Urban Development
Addressing the ceremony, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz declared the projects as transformative for the city.
“These flyover and underpass projects are not just infrastructure—they are a game changer for Rawalpindi,” she said. “Public welfare remains our highest priority, and we are committed to completing development initiatives at record speed.”
She praised the collaborative efforts of all involved departments, stating, “The timely completion of these projects will be remembered as a milestone in the city’s development journey.”
