The Economic Coordination Committee has approved key decisions to boost housing and infrastructure development. The meeting was held in Islamabad on February 27, 2026. It took place at the Finance Division. The session was chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb.
The committee reviewed multiple summaries submitted by different ministries. The focus remained on affordable housing, agriculture, and rail connectivity. Officials said the decisions will support economic growth. They also aim to strengthen energy security and rural productivity.
Revised Mera Ghar Mera Aashiana Scheme Gets Green Light
The ECC reviewed a summary from the Ministry of Housing and Works. The proposal sought approval for revised features of the โMera Ghar Mera Aashiana (MGMA)โ mortgage financing scheme. The scheme supports low-cost housing across Pakistan.
Officials informed the committee that the scheme has received strong public response. More than 10,594 loan applications have been submitted since its launch. Loan disbursements are already underway. Demand for affordable housing finance remains high.
The ECC approved major revisions to expand access. The loan limit has been increased to PKR 10 million. Eligible housing size parameters have been expanded. A uniform 5 percent end-user pricing has been introduced. This move ensures clarity and affordability for borrowers.
The committee also approved scaling targets for housing finance over a four-year period. Implementation will continue through the State Bank of Pakistan mechanism. Already disbursed loans will be adjusted to the revised 5 percent rate. This step ensures uniformity and fairness.
The ECC emphasized fiscal discipline. Subsidy payments will match actual loan disbursements. Funding will be managed within annual budget allocations. Officials said the revised framework will stimulate construction activity. It will generate employment opportunities. It will also promote sustainable home ownership through a balanced subsidy model.
Grants Approved for Agriculture and Rail Connectivity Projects
The ECC also approved a summary from the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control. The committee authorized the transfer of Rs. 7.289 million as a Technical Supplementary Grant. The funds will support the ICT component of the โNational Program for Enhancing Command Areas in Barani Areas of Pakistan.โ
The project aims to improve agricultural productivity in rain-fed regions. Barani areas depend heavily on rainfall. Better command area management will strengthen crop yields. Officials said the initiative will benefit farmers and rural communities.
In another major decision, the ECC approved a Rs. 6.61 billion Technical Supplementary Grant for the Thar Coal Rail Connectivity Project. The summary was submitted by the Railways Division. The grant will serve as budgetary cover for the project.
The rail connectivity project will transport indigenous coal from Thar to power plants and industrial sectors. This move supports energy security. It also reduces reliance on imported fuels. Officials said the project will lower energy costs over time and strengthen domestic resources.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials. Federal Minister for Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh joined virtually. Federal secretaries and representatives from relevant ministries and regulatory bodies were also present.
The ECC decisions signal a strong policy push toward housing expansion, rural development, and energy infrastructure. The approved measures are expected to boost economic activity and improve long-term sustainability.
