Hollywood star portrays MMA legend Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie’s emotional sports drama, The Smashing Machine
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson surprised fans and critics alike at the Venice International Film Festival with a striking transformation for his latest film, The Smashing Machine. The 53-year-old actor, globally known for his chiseled, muscular frame, appeared visibly leaner and more subdued in his portrayal of MMA and UFC icon Mark Kerr, signaling a new chapter in his acting career.
Directed and written by Benny Safdie, the film offers a gritty, emotional look into the life of Mark Kerr — a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and Pride FC veteran — exploring not only his triumphs in the ring but also his battles with addiction, pain, and personal demons.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson described the transformation as deeply personal and professionally challenging.
“This transformation was something I was really hungry to do,” he said. “I’ve had the fortune of making big films over the years, but there was a voice inside of me that said, ‘What if I could do more?’ This role gave me that chance.”
Red Carpet Premiere Earns 15-Minute Standing Ovation
The film’s world premiere turned emotional, as Johnson walked the red carpet alongside Emily Blunt, who stars as Dawn, Kerr’s then-wife. The screening concluded with a 15-minute standing ovation, visibly moving the entire cast. Johnson was seen wiping away tears, while director Safdie dropped to his knees in disbelief at the reception. Kerr himself, attending the premiere, stood proudly and applauded, his life story playing out before his eyes.
Mark Kerr Responds: “Still in Disbelief”
Reacting on social media, Mark Kerr shared his thoughts after seeing the film.
“I am still in disbelief that this is real,” Kerr wrote. “I am so proud of the work DJ put into becoming The Smashing Machine. I have so much gratitude, humility, and respect for every detail.”
Johnson responded with heartfelt emotion, replying:
“Love you brotha. Your life changed mine.”
A Career-Defining Role
The Smashing Machine is being praised as one of Dwayne Johnson’s most powerful and emotionally layered performances. Known for his action-heavy blockbusters, this shift toward character-driven drama may redefine how audiences view the former wrestling superstar.
The film will officially hit theaters on October 3, promising a raw, intense, and deeply human portrayal of a man caught between greatness and self-destruction.
