Dubai has officially launched fully autonomous RT6 taxis developed by Baidu Apollo Go, marking a landmark step in the city’s smart mobility strategy. The service is set to open to the public in the first quarter of 2026.
Inauguration by Crown Prince
Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated the driverless taxis. He rode in an RT6 taxi to the World Governments Summit, demonstrating Dubai’s rapid adoption of advanced transport technologies.
Advanced AI and Navigation Systems
The RT6 autonomous taxis operate using artificial intelligence, high-precision LiDAR sensors, radars, and advanced cameras. These systems allow the vehicles to safely navigate city roads and respond to live traffic conditions.
The taxis integrate real-time traffic data, high-definition maps, and deep-learning algorithms. This ensures full compliance with traffic laws while maintaining safe interactions with pedestrians and other vehicles.
Collaboration Between Dubai RTA and Baidu
The project is a result of collaboration between Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Baidu Apollo Go. Planning and operational trials were completed within ten months following discussions at the 2025 World Government Summit.
Baidu Apollo Go has also established its first operations and control center outside China at Dubai Science Park. The facility monitors fleet performance, conducts safety tests, and manages software updates and vehicle maintenance.
Expansion Plans for the Autonomous Fleet
Authorities aim to expand the RT6 fleet to more than 1,000 vehicles in the coming years. This move is expected to strengthen Dubai’s position as a global leader in AI-driven and sustainable urban transportation.
